    The American Journal of Poetry publishes superlative poetry from the most renowned poets in the world to those publishing for their first time. We are a writer-friendly, family-operated review. We employ no readers, screeners nor do we tolerate slush piles. Each submission will be read by Ed.in-Chief Robert Nazarene and Senior Editor James Wilson. James Hearst Poetry Prize: Winner Announced. Congratulations to poet Alan Elyshevitz, whose poem, "Bread," was selected by judge Dana Levin from among over 1,200 entries. The poem can be read in our Spring, 2019 issue, and will soon be available in a signed, letterpress broadside, produced in an edition of 30 by Caveworks Press and Studios.

    We are a writer-friendly review. Simultaneous submissions are just fine. You may rely on the aforementioned prompt response. We are open to beginning and established poets equally. Nothing gives us more pleasure than to present a writer’s very first publication of poetry. Each biannual issue will feature between 100 and 150 poets.     The American Literary Review welcomes submissions of previously unpublished poems, short stories, and essays. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable if noted in your cover letter. Please note that all submissions will be considered for online publication only. For any questions not covered in this section, please email the Managing Editor.
